In small, discussion-based classes led by a faculty of accomplished scholars and writers, Saint Mary’s English majors study the rich and diverse literature of the English-speaking cultures of the world.
Learning Outcomes
When students have completed a program of study in English, they should be able to:
- SITUATE texts in their broad historical, cultural, and/or literary context. This serves as an indicator of informed, active reading.
- APPLY appropriate methods of inquiry, theoretical approaches, and/or interpretive strategies when analyzing texts.
- COMPOSE effective writing to strategically meet specific goals, audiences, and/or situations (academic, professional, social, public, artistic).
- COMPOSE clear writing that synthesizes scholarly perspectives with analysis and reasoning in order to make an extended argument.
- EVALUATE how texts reflect, reinforce, and/or challenge notions of diversity and difference, applying critical frameworks to their assessments.
Coursework will include the following specific requirements:

Foundations
Students are required to complete ENGL 100 and 200 as foundational courses. Literature before 1800
Students will complete one course in Literature before 1800. Such courses include: Critical and Literary Theory
Students will complete one course in Critical and Literary Theory. Such courses include: Arts of Writing
Students will complete one course in Arts of Writing. Such courses include: Capstone
Students will complete a Capstone project in English. Topics in Literary Studies
Students will take an additional five English courses. Each course must be at least 3 units. Up to two of these courses may be fulfilled by 100- or 200-level ENGL courses, 300- or 400-level WRIT courses, or CW courses of any level. |
