In small, discussion-based classes led by a faculty of accomplished scholars and writers, Saint Mary’s English majors study the rich and diverse literature of the English-speaking cultures of the world.

A major in English will complete a minimum of 40 units of coursework, typically fulfilled in 11 courses, at least 22 units of which must be at the upper-division (300-400) level. That coursework will include the following specific requirements:

Foundations

Students are required to complete ENGL 100 and 200 as foundational courses.

Literature before 1800

Students will complete one course in Literature before 1800, at the 200-level or above. Such courses include:

Literature before 1900

Students will complete one course in Literature before 1900, including the option of a second course in Literature before 1800, at the 200-level or above. Such courses include:

Critical and Literary Theory

Students will complete two courses in Critical and Literary Theory, at the 300-level or above. Such courses include:

Arts of Writing

Students will complete one course in Arts of Writing, at the 100-level or above. Such courses include:

Capstone

Students will complete a Capstone project in English.
