Course Requirements for SaLAS Major


All major concentrations require three full credit (1.00) lower division courses and their accompanying partial credit (.25) praxis, and 7.25 upper division courses (11.0 credits) as follows:

Upper Division


Upper division course listings are rotated regularly to offer students the widest variety in the field. Except for world languages in translation courses, all upper- division courses are conducted in the target language. Courses in translation are not normally taken for credit toward the major. A minimum of four upper-division courses must be taken on campus.

Students who plan to study abroad should complete the SPAN 011 /SPAN 091  requirement before going abroad and before enrolling in upper division courses. The Department of World Languages and Cultures does not accept SPAN 011  courses taken in summer school or as an online course. Students who take Spanish courses abroad, and who do not declare a Spanish major prior to leaving, cannot declare a major in Spanish upon returning until they have completed the SPAN 011 /SPAN 091  prerequisite.
