EDUC 625 - Early Literacy Classroom Assessment Prerequisites Students must be employed in a school that is implementing Reading Recovery and be employed as an early literacy teacher. The principal of the school must agree to have the teacher enroll as a student in this course and allow the teacher to teach one (1) student in one-to-one lessons (30 minutes each) on a daily basis. Acceptance into training in Early Literacy Classroom Teacher Program at selected school districts throughout states affiliated with the Reading Recovery Training Center at Saint Mary’s College.
This course is offered in the late summer prior to the opening of school. It is taught by Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders who hold a Master’s Degree and have successfully completed 12 to 16units of Graduate Level post-Master’s coursework at Saint Mary’s College or comparable course of study from a Reading Recovery sanctioned University Training Center and who are employed by local school districts or agencies as credentialed Teacher Leaders. The purposes of this course are to prepare Early Literacy Classroom Teachers to: administer, score and interpret running records of test reading; administer, score and interpret other assessment tasks of early literacy acquisition; develop skill in summarizing results of early literacy assessment tasks; construct an assessment kit of materials for observing children’s literacy development; and acquire observational competency in determining children’s strengths related to early literacy acquisition.
Additional Notes This course is taught off campus at selected school Districts by trained Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders affiliated with the Reading Recovery Training Center at Saint Mary’s College who meets the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines of Literacy Lessons in the United States.
