This course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of the structures, tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body. Major body systems and their normal functioning and interrelationships will be explored. The material will place an emphasis not only on the terminology of anatomy, but also the functional and developmental aspects of anatomy and how it relates to function (physiology) and disease. It will also focus on physiological mechanisms from the cell to organ system and organismal levels. The content of this course serves as foundational requirements for careers in the health sciences such as medicine, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, pharmacology, nutrition, bioengineering, and biotechnology. Information will be provided through the liberal use of diagrams, models, dissections, laboratory experiments, tests, demonstrations, and video presentations/computer simulations. The accompanying Anatomy and Physiology I Lab is designed to integrate, apply and clarify the material presented in lecture, and learn how to conduct basic physiological tests and assessments.
Students may not take BIOL 250 or 250L if they have previously completed another Anatomy or Physiology course, e.g., BIOL 213 or BIOL 215 or BIOL 225
