PSYCH 270 - Helping Professions: Foundations & Skills Lower Division
Prerequisites PSYCH 100 ; Minimum grade C-.
An introduction to the foundations and skills essential for effective
helping relationships. With a focus on the influences of culture, gender, and ethnicity on mental
health and wellness, students will explore principles of empathy, ethical guidelines, nonverbal
communication, and interview techniques. Through structured exercises and small-group
practice, students will develop and refine basic paraprofessional counseling skills, including
active listening, reflecting content and meaning, and building rapport.
