During the last 15 years, Netflix Inc. has challenged assumptions about communication studies through its zealous and successful promotion of algorithm-based, data-driven content. In the process, Netflix has upended the business models of California’s two largest industries. In this course, we ask, what is Netflix, and what is doing to Hollywood, to (and with) the data miners of Silicon Valley, and to us? This course investigates Netflix both as a singular brand and as a model for business and entertainment. For the first time, this course will include post-pandemic analysis of “the Netflix effect” on the major studios and on the major tech brands. This course serves as a useful introduction to convergence culture, “big data,” theories about binging, and the changing business models of communications and media companies. Students will learn how to critically appraise the content of Netflix and its competitors with textual analyses that combine traditional analytical methods with the content of Netflix’s brand. Students will leave this course with the tools to understand and transform the next decade and, perhaps, the next Netflix.
