JAN 102 - Decolonizing Podcasters in the Era of Surveillance Capitalism Upper division
Full credit
Hybrid
MTuWTh, 6:00 PM - 8:35 PM
In addition to learning basic podcasting skills, this course seeks to advance students’ understanding of podcasting as a space of decolonization across a broad spectrum of social, cultural, and political settings. The course situates contemporary podcasting into broader histories involving the use of radio technology in the service of anti-colonial struggle. Students will investigate the ways in which decolonial podcasters engage in the processes of interrogation and critique, counter-narrative, and action. The course will explore both the promise and vulnerabilities in the podcasting space, and the threat posed by surveillance capitalism and the emerging podcast oligopoly, known as the “the podcaster’s’ dilemma.
